Edwards Cancer Institute is home to five dedicated radiation oncologists who are experts in treating cancer and other diseases through the targeted use of radiation. Therapeutic radiology treatments can be administered independently or in conjunction with other modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy, and various other treatments.
The radiation oncologist, based on factors like the type of cancer, tumor location, and surrounding tissue sensitivity, determines the quantity and type of radiation to be used. The treatment team maps out your position for each treatment to set up the actual treatment. This involves using molds, headrests, or other devices. The area to be treated may be marked on the body, ensuring precise delivery of radiation. Special shields might be created to focus the radiation and protect surrounding tissue. Following the simulation, the radiation oncologist defines the exact type of treatment.
Therapeutic radiology treatments can be complex and emotionally challenging for both patients and their families. If you have questions or concerns about the treatment, don't hesitate to discuss them with your radiation oncologist for clarity and guidance.
